The Outreach Committee oversees six
congregational programs that focus on service to our local and global
community. Nancy Sprules is the Outreach Chairperson.
The Oasis in Kanata
The Oasis in Kanata
provides information, education, and support for
caregivers of those with mental illness. Elise Laviolette, a
professional mental health specialist, is the Program Manager of this
community outreach initiative of Glen Cairn United Church.
Kanata Stittsville Refugee Sponsorship Group (KSRSG)
GCUC is one of seven member churches
that sponsor United Nations Convention refugees from around the globe
to provide: assistance in their current country of residence, a
safe haven and the opportunity for a new life in Canada, and settlement
assistance for their first year in Canada. Marg Friesen represents
GCUC on the KSRSG.
Kanata Food Cupboard (KFC) Team
GCUC is one of six churches that have been providing distribution and delivery services for the Kanata Food Cupboard
for over twenty years. The KFC is a non-profit agency that
supplies emergency food to self-identifying individuals living in the
Kanata wards of the City of Ottawa. Keith Allingham, Georgia Dryden and Dianne Astles coordinate GCUC's
Food Cupboard's volunteers.
Monthly Outreach Appeal
The Monthly Outreach Appeal collects
goods to support the work of other organizations in our local community
and around the world. Cathy Turner and Holly Egan manage this
Prime Time in Kanata (coming soon - contact David Rothwell)
Ad Hoc Committee Social Committee of Prime Time in Kanata responsible
for three social events each year, namely the St. Patricks Day Tea, the
Strawberry Social and the Games Afternoon is led by Bev Armbruster and
Mission and Service
As a member congregation of the United
Church of Canada (UCC), GCUC collects and remits funds that support UCC
mission and service work in Canada and abroad. For a description
of the programs funded by M&S, visit: www.united-church.ca/funding/msfund. Nancy Sprules is responsible for liaison with the UCC on Mission and Service concerns.
Other committees and individuals also
reach out to the local and global community on a regular or ad hoc
basis. Examples are:
Friday Morning Coffee Hour
Every Friday 10:00 am - 11am. Come
and enjoy coffee and good company. Informal, friendly
conversation and usually some goodies.
UCW (United Church Women)
UCW meets on the second Monday of the month at 7:30 in the lounge.
Exceptions are June, July, and August, October, and in December we have
our potluck at 6:30. In January and February we meet at 2pm in the lounge. Contact Person: Martha Townshend Colford.
Lunch 'n Such
The Catering Committee of UCW provides a nutritious meal, fellowship, and
entertainment or information to members of the congregation and their
friends. Lunch 'n Such is held in the months of October,
December, February, April, and June.
Each summer, Glen Cairn United hosts
Camp Awesome, a week-long Christian day camp program for children aged
4 to 12 sponsored by the Ottawa Presbytery of the United Church of
Canada. Activities include games, crafts, drama, singing, water
fun, and learning about important topics of faith and character
Santa Claus Parade
As spectators crowd the sidewalks in
front of the church, waiting for the annual Kanata Santa Claus parade
to pass, church volunteers provide free hot drinks and homemade cookies
to the chilled onlookers. Volunteers also distribute
hundreds of business-card sized announcements of the UCW's annual
Cookie Walk fundraiser and the Christmas church services.
